# App Name Generator

A free browser tool that turns a one-line description of your app into 24 name candidates and runs a live `.com` availability check on every one. No signup, nothing stored, and it still generates names if the availability lookup is blocked.

## How to use it

1. Type what your app does in a few plain words — "book a dog walker", "split bills with roommates", "track gym workouts".
2. Leave all five naming styles on, or switch some off to steer the batch toward compounds, invented words or metaphors.
3. Press **Generate names**. Twenty-four candidates appear immediately; the `.com` badges fill in behind them as the DNS lookups return.
4. Star the names you like — they move to the top of the list and stay there.
5. Press **Generate again** for a fresh batch, then **Copy shortlist** to take your favourites, their domains and their status with you.

## How the names are built

Five strategies run side by side, all in your browser, all seeded from the words you typed:

- **Compound** — two real words joined: DogDash, WalkLoop, NestRelay. The most reliable source of names that are easy to say and spell.
- **Prefix and suffix** — your word plus a modern affix: `-ly`, `-ify`, `-io`, `-hq`, `-kit`, `-go`, `-app`, `-flow`, `-lab`, or a `Get-`, `Try-`, `Go-` prefix. Walkly, Bookify, Tendkit.
- **Portmanteau blend** — the head of one word fused to the tail of another, with duplicate letters collapsed. Walk + tempo becomes Walkempo; the fusing rule is what keeps blends pronounceable.
- **Invented brandable** — pronounceable consonant-vowel patterns, often stemmed from your own words, capped at nine characters. This is where short, ownable, trademark-friendly names come from.
- **Metaphor** — words drawn from a curated bank grouped by motion, speed, care, trust, light, growth and simplicity, combined with your words or a suffix.

Your description also selects a domain wordbank. The tool matches your words against cue lists for delivery, fitness, booking, finance, social, education, health, home services, marketplace, productivity and travel, and pulls synonym-ish vocabulary from the best two matches. Every candidate is filtered for length (4–15 characters), at least one vowel, no triple letters and no run of four consonants — the crude but effective test for "can a human say this out loud".

## How the availability check works

Each candidate is lowercased, stripped to letters, and looked up as `<name>.com` over DNS-over-HTTPS — Cloudflare first (`cloudflare-dns.com/dns-query` with `Accept: application/dns-json`), falling back to `dns.google/resolve`. Lookups run four at a time so the list appears instantly and badges stream in.

- **`.com` likely free** — the resolver returned NXDOMAIN (status 3), meaning the name does not exist in DNS at all.
- **`.com` taken** — the name resolves.
- **`.com` unknown** — both resolvers failed or were blocked. The tool says so rather than guessing.

**This is a hint, not a registrar lookup.** A registered domain that has no A record — parked with no DNS, or held by a squatter who never configured it — will show as likely free. Confirm at a registrar before you buy. And a free domain tells you nothing about trademarks.

## How to pick an app name

Domain availability is the last filter, not the first. Run a candidate through these first:

- **Short.** Aim for 4–12 characters, ideally two syllables. The App Store shows 30 characters for the name and Google Play 30 for the title, but the home screen truncates far earlier — roughly 10–12 characters on iOS before an ellipsis. A long name is a name nobody sees.
- **Sayable.** Say it in a sentence out loud: "I booked it on ___." If you stumble, or if you have to spell it, drop it. Word-of-mouth is the cheapest acquisition channel you have and it only works on names people can pronounce.
- **Spellable from hearing it.** No silent letters, no dropped vowels, no numerals standing in for words, no creative `-r` endings. If someone hears the name on a podcast, they should type it correctly on the first try.
- **Clear of trademarks.** Search the USPTO's TESS database (and your local registry) for the name in your app's class — a domain being free means nothing here. Trademark collision is the one naming mistake that forces a rename after launch.
- **Available across the set you need.** The `.com`, an App Store name that isn't already reserved, and matching handles on the one or two social platforms you'll actually use. Apple reserves the app name at record creation, so check it early.
- **Not boxed in.** "DogWalkNow" is a great name until you add cat sitting. Metaphor and invented names travel better than literal ones.
- **Distinct in your category.** Open your competitors' App Store listings and read the names together. If yours blends in, the name is doing no work.

## Questions

**How do I know the name is really free to use?** You don't from this tool alone. The DNS check is a strong signal that the `.com` has never been registered, but confirm at a registrar and search a trademark database before committing.

**Does the App Store require a unique app name?** Yes. Apple requires a unique name across the App Store and reserves it when you create the app record. Google Play rejects duplicate or infringing titles. Both cap the visible name at 30 characters.

**Is anything stored?** No. Names are generated on your device. The only outbound request is the bare domain sent to a public DNS resolver, and turning off the availability checkbox removes even that.
